SU-CASA: Community Arts Engagement Program for Artists and Organizations in New York

Dated: November 29, 2022

SU-CASA is a community arts engagement program that places artists and organizations for residencies at senior centers across New York City.

Donor Name: Lower Manhattan Cultural Council

State: New York

Boroughs: Manhattan

Type of Grant: Program

Deadline: 12/13/2022

Details:

Individual artists may apply for SU-CASA through their local arts council; organizations must apply for a SU-CASA designation directly through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

SU-CASA connects artists with older adults in senior centers and positively impacts the well-being of older adults through arts-based activities. The program supports artists and organizations who are sensitive to the needs of older adults and are interested in engaging their communities. Each senior center is unique and offers access to different types of spaces, resources and communities. Through synergistic collaborations, SU-CASA cultivates unique arts learning experiences and generative social exchange for participating older adults.

The program provides selected artists with a stipend in exchange for the creation and delivery of arts programming for older adults. The program has two components:

  • artists engage participating older adults in an art project or series of cultural programs over the course of the residency, and
  • the residency culminates in a public program component – exhibits, readings, performances, open houses or other cultural interactions open to the surrounding community.

Project Eligibility

Applications will be accepted for projects in any artistic discipline. Projects must meet the following requirements:

  • Project must include an in-person interactive engagement component for the participants at the senior center where the residency is held. Project activities may include workshops, classes, or participatory art making projects created by or in collaboration with the participants. Projects consisting of performances for the older Lower Manhattan Cultural Council adults or other passive-activities are ineligible. Entirely virtual projects are not eligible.
  • Project must include at least one public program component for the public to experience and engage with the arts at the senior center such as an exhibit, open house, performance, reading or other cultural interaction that allows participating older adults to share their work with friends, family and the surrounding community.
  • The public program activities must be promoted and available at no charge to the general public. Artists are strongly encouraged to engage other members of the senior center community as part of the public program component.
  • Project activities must take place between February 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023, and should span the duration of the program.
  • Project activities are expected to include at least 35 contact hours between the artist and senior center participants during the residency period. The public component should not count towards the contact hours.
  • Project activities, including the public component, must take place at the senior center, unless otherwise agreed to with the senior center director.

Eligible Applicants

Individual Artists:

LMCC reviews applications from individual artists who meet the following Eligibility Requirements:

  • Individual artists must be based in Manhattan.
  • Individual artists may not apply or receive funds on behalf of a non-profit organization or a for-profit entity.
  • Individual artists must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Individual artists cannot be currently enrolled full-time in a degree-granting institution.
  • Individual artists may apply to only one local arts council for consideration in only one borough. Applicants who submit applications to multiple local arts councils will be disqualified.

Previous SPARC and SU-CASA artists are eligible to apply for the 2023 program and may apply to work with a previous senior center partner or in a new center. All returning artists must submit a complete application to be considered for placement.
