2022 Head Start Arts Integration for Vermont Nonprofit Organization

Arts-integrated instruction plays an important role in children’s academic, social, and emotional growth. The impact is specifically meaningful in working with children living in poverty, dual-language learners, and those with cognitive or behavioral challenges.

The Head Start Arts Integration program supports children and teachers in early education programs with direct opportunities to think, create, and learn through the arts, helping children gain appreciation for the arts and be better prepared for school. Organizations may request up to $6,000 from the Vermont Arts Council to provide arts-based and creative programming for children and families enrolled in Head Start and/or to build the capacity of existing arts partnerships with Head Start and/or regional organizations serving children enrolled in Head Start.

Applicants to the HSAIP are nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, such as arts or social service organizations, providing Head Start classes. Successful applicants will partner with at least one regional Head Start program to deliver arts-integrated experiences These experiences may, for example, be artist residencies of one or more days that:

  • support children in reaching arts and nonarts curriculum outcomes.
  • support classroom teachers beyond the timeframe of the grant.
  • employ a teaching artist who is experienced in early childhood settings and a master of the arts discipline at the heart of the instruction.
  • promote opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and/or planning between teaching artists and the classroom teachers.

Grant Amounts

Grant amounts are up to $6,000. Grant amounts are dependent upon federal and state funding and are subject to change.

Who May Submit an Application

The applicant must be a Vermont nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status, such as an arts organization or social service organiztion providing Head Start classes, that:

  • has been in operation for at least one year before applying
  • has a Dun and Bradstreet number

Who May Not Apply or Receive Funding

  • organizations that have received any other Arts Council grant in FY2022 to support the same project
  • organizations that have previously received Arts Council grants and have not completed required reporting
