The purpose of the Tourism/Recreation Grant program is to support local nonprofits, businesses, and municipalities in the development and expansion of tourist and recreational assets/events that promote Clinton County, increase tourism, and promote overnight stays within the county.
The annual grant program is designed to support local nonprofit organizations and municipalities in the development and expansion of tourist and recreational assets and events that promote Clinton County and increase tourism.
Grants may be awarded for: marketing, promotional and advertising expenses; new project or event development and expansion; and infrastructure improvements that benefit tourism and enhance the visitors’ experience.
The 2023 program has earmarked $75,000 for grants, the highest amount ever allocated. Funds for the program come from monies collected through the county’s Hotel Tax, paid by those who stay overnight at local lodging establishments. The tax is passed from the county to the Tourist Promotion Agency to support tourist promotion.
Guidelines
- Grants may be awarded for: marketing, promotional and advertising expenses; new project or event development and expansion; and infrastructure improvements that benefit tourism and enhance the visitors’ experience.
- Grants to businesses will only be awarded for promotion or advertising costs for a project that meets the tourism impact requirement.
- Grants will not be awarded for: political or religious purposes.
- In addition, grants may not be used for signage that promotes a specific private entity on the site of that entity, except where the signage also carries the logo and website of the recognized tourist promotion agency.
- All grant awards require a cash or in-kind local match of at least 25 percent. In-kind services may include volunteer hours spent in completing the project. Volunteer hours are to be calculated at no more than $20/hour.
- Advertising associated with the approved project must include the Clinton County Visitors Bureau logo and a tagline that states that the project is “Supported by a Tourism & Recreation Grant from the Clinton County Visitors Bureau and County Commissioners.”
- Projects/events must be completed within the same calendar year as the grant award – no extensions will be permitted.
- Any changes or revisions to an approved grant must be requested in writing and approved by the Grant Committee prior to the event date.
- A grant committee will review the applications, after which the applicants will be notified of the results.
- All grant awards are reimbursements for actual money expended. Recipient must submit a final report with the reimbursement request online to the Clinton County Planning Department.
- Projects scheduled from March to July must request reimbursement by July 31, 2023.
- Projects scheduled from July to December must request reimbursement by December 1, 2023.
- An awardee who has not completed their projects or does not submit the final documentation by the deadline will be deemed ineligible for funding next year.
