Youth as Solutions (YaS) is creating a generation of citizens who are passionate about making a positive impact in their schools and communities, addressing community health, educational equity, and environmental justice issues. Leadership teams of young people in grades 6-12, along with an adult mentor, apply to be part of one of the Youth as Solutions cohorts, where they will participate in a self-paced, active learning experience, identifying and taking action on an issue in their community. Students gain leadership skills while adult mentors receive quality service-learning instruction and resources. Youth-adult teams connect with peers in cohorts working on similar subtopics such as teen driving safety, health promotion in Latino communities, and so much more!
Youth as Solutions Team will
- Participate in a 3-hour Virtual Kickoff Training on either October 3 or 7, 2023
- Complete an investigation of needs in your community, along with an individual student needs and interests assessment
- Prepare and plan a service project/campaign that meets those needs
- Take action! Implement your project or campaign by March 30, 2024
- Report on activities, reflect, and demonstrate your learning with a final Service-Learning Showcase video so that they can share your story!

Uses of funds
Grant funds may be used for direct project expenses required to implement your project, and may also be used for t-shirts or swag (logos and banner designs provided), food for meetings, substitutes, and youth stipends are allowable if required for the project. Funds may not be used for indirect expenses (overhead), salary, offset of normally budgeted costs, or expenses not related to the program. A budgeting template is provided in the online community to use as part of your planning process.
Eligibility Criteria
Leadership Teams led by a minimum of two youth leaders in grades 6-12 along with an adult leader (teacher or group advisor), sponsored by a U.S. public K-12 school, U.S. school district, or U.S. nonprofit 501(c)3 (including private, not-for-profit schools).
Expectation
Youth and adult leaders will…
- Recruit and lead a Site Team of students to plan and implement the project or campaign
- Complete all stages of the service-learning process (Investigation, Planning and Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration) using Youth as Solutions materials and resources
- Actively participate in the learning community through monthly live sessions, staff interaction, and online discussions
- Complete a Pre and Post evaluation survey (Youth) and Team Reflection
- Report on your team’s service activities using the online forms
- Submit a Service-Learning Showcase video as your final product along with Media Releases for youth and adults appearing in the video.
