California: DKI Black/African American Cultural Preservation Events Mini-Grant Program (Cycle 1)

Through funding from the City’s Dream Keeper Initiative, and in partnership with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and Human Rights Commission, En2action developed the Mini-Grants Program as an initiative instrumental in both neighborhoods’ economic recovery, and the goal of preserving Black culture and communities in the City.

Details:

The Program offers up to $7,500 in funding for community members, community-based organizations (CBO’s), and stakeholders to carry out neighborhood-based Black cultural functions and events across five key districts in the City of San Francisco:

  • Lakeview
  • OMI (Oceanview, Merced Heights, Ingleside)
  • Sunnydale
  • Tenderloin
  • Visitacion Valley

Grantees for Mini-Grants are required to be San Francisco residents, preferably working and/or living in the neighborhoods they seek to serve through event planning. The following criteria are required for this funding opportunity:

Category

Approved events will fall under at least one of the following categories:

  • Music (i.e. concert, small performance, DJ event)
  • Education (i.e. speaker series, panel discussion, workshop/training)
  • Health & Wellness (i.e. health fair, farmer’s market, )
  • Sports (i.e. track meet, basketball camp, martial arts seminar)
  • Black Culture (i.e. documentary screening, historical lecture, cultural celebration)
  • Vendor Fair (i.e. craft fair, makers market, fashion symposium)
  • Youth & Family (i.e. petting zoo, amusement event, family movie night)
  • Faith-Based (spiritual retreat, religious conference, gospel event)

If an event does not fall under at least one of these categories, applicants must provide a clear description of event elements, target audience, and intended community benefit outcomes.

Cost: Events approved for funding must be free and open to the public.

Criteria

  • Applications for the Mini-Grants Program consider the individual grantee, as well as the event(s) proposed. Grantees are required to be:
    • San Francisco residents
    • Preferably working / living in the neighborhoods their proposed event(s) are in
    • Events must be free and open to the public
