City of Boston Strand Theatre Grant Program 2023-24 (Massachusetts)

Dated: March 6, 2023

The City of Boston is requesting applications for its Strand Theatre Grant Program to assist presenters with costs to produce in the Strand Theatre.

Donor Name: City of Boston

State: Massachusetts

City: Boston

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 03/31/2023

Size of the Grant: $25,000

Details:

Strand Theatre Grant is open to organizations or individuals. For 2023-2024 there will be three to five-week blocks on the Strand calendar set aside for dance and theater producers as part of this grant program. These grants are for all forms of performance expression in dance, music, theatre, film, and video. Grantees are encouraged to expand on a past production or create something completely new.

The Strand serves as a cultural and educational resource to artists and audiences, regardless of race or cultural background, age, ability, gender, economic level, or sexual orientation. It operates mainly as a roadhouse for touring events, concerts, community multicultural events, theatre productions, dance productions, independent movie premieres, video production, rehearsal space, meeting space, and art exhibits.

The Strand has a special commitment to the surrounding communities of Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan. They welcome the creativity of all cultural expressions and genres of performance and strive to keep the Strand equitably accessible, especially to smaller organizations and sole presenters. Their goal is to build strong, lasting community partnerships to guarantee access for all.

Grant Categories

The Strand offers operating support grants to organizations with budgets under $500,000. All grantees will receive the full grant. Grants will be distributed in the following categories:

  • Level 1: Organizations with annual budgets less than $500,000 may apply for a grant of $25,000. These grants will be used for dance or theater multi-day productions
  • Level 2: Organizations with annual budgets less than $200,000 may apply for $10,000.
  • Level 3: Organizations with annual budgets less than $100,000 may apply for $5,000.

Funding Strategy

There will be different grant categories depending on budget size and all grantees in each specific category will receive the same amount. These grants are only for presenters who are producing their event at the Strand. The funds can be used for any production expenses, with the exception of the 4-wall building space fee. These grants will give small and emerging producers a chance to scale up their vision at the Strand.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Non-profit and individual producers of the following disciplines may apply:
    • Music
    • Film
    • Video
    • Performing Arts
    • Theatre
    • Dance.
  • The production must take place at the Strand. Individuals must be Boston-based. For-profit producers may also apply, but must but must provide a minimum amount of free or pay-what-you-can tickets for the community, based on seat occupancy (to be distributed through the Strand).
