The Neighborhood Matching Grants (NMG) program, awards matching funds to neighborhood groups to help make Durham’s neighborhoods better places to live, work and play.

Details:

The City’s NMG funds resident-planned and implemented projects intended to improve the livability of neighborhoods, foster community cohesion, and/or build community capacity. NMG recipients match City funds through volunteer hours and professional services . Community building (the process of bringing people together and building relationships) is as important as project results and is the core to project success: The program’s purpose is to build neighborhood pride and resident involvement to:

  • Leverage resident involvement and resources
  • Develop and enhance community and City partnerships
  • Empower neighborhoods to solve local problems

Grant Amount

Each applicant may request up to $2,500 in matching funds.

Eligible Projects

NMG seeks to support projects and programs that demonstrate shared benefit with a goal of improving neighborhood quality of life.

All projects must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Be achievable within three months of project agreement Occur within Durham’s city limits
  • Provide a public benefit
  • Be free and open to all members of the public
  • Be initiated, planned and implemented by your
    neighbors
  • Demonstrate a minimum 1:1 neighborhood match

Types of Project

  • Physical Improvement: Enhance areas in the neighborhood
  • Neighborhood Pride: Strengthen sense of community
  • Education and Training: Build skills of neighbors
  • Public Safety: Reduce crime

Eligible Groups

Applying groups must:

  • Be neighborhood-based, such as the following
    • Resident groups
    • Neighborhood associations
    • Homeowners associations
    • Exist in Durham’s city limits
    • Consist of residents from your neighborhood

Ineligible Groups

Individuals, faith communities, nonprofits, schools and businesses and other organizations, which do not fit in the above criteria, are not eligible to apply. The City will not review applications received by such entities. However, they encourage these entities to support neighborhood-based groups, who are eligible to apply.
