Grants for Artists and Arts-Related Organizations in Massachusetts

Dated: September 8, 2022

The Brookline Commission makes grants to support artists and arts-related organizations in Brookline.

Donor Name: Mass Cultural Council

State: Massachusetts

Town: Brookline

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 10/17/2022

Size of the Grant: $17,700

Grant Duration: 3 years

Details:

They encourage them to apply for grants, which are intended to enlarge their audiences and to make the arts available to community members of all ages.

2023 Local Priorities

Based on feedback from the community, grant funding will be prioritized based on the proposal review criteria listed below.

  • Cultural Impact: Contribution to the cultural life of Brookline.
  • Potential: Projects that provide a clear benefit to the Brookline community beyond the specific activity funded.
  • Target Audience: Projects that include diverse and underserved audiences. Due to COVID19, it is permissible for projects and events to be broadcast virtually.

Application Guidelines – Please include the following in your plan of work:

  • Specific Aims: Objectives clearly stated in list or summary form, with the project’s benefit to the Brookline community in mind.
  • Timeline and Confirmed Venue: Overview of key dates and venue: either the venue or the participating artist(s) must be Brookline based. Due to COVID19, virtual activities and events are permissible but there is a strong preference for these to be associated with Brookline organizations.
  • Marketing Plan: How you plan to market and communicate your event. Promotion of both virtual and non-virtual activities and events should target and attract Brookline audiences.
  • Project Description: Please be brief and clear. All non-virtual projects must show adherence to appropriate local and state COVID19 guidelines: BCA decisions will be informed by this information.
  • Budget: Clear indication of costs associated with the project and any funding beyond a grant from Brookline; if either the venue or performing artist(s) is/are not in or from Brookline, or if callaborating with separate Brookline artists, clearly delineate the cost(s) associated with the Brookline-based portion of the project.

Note: Representation will be expected at the Commission’s Spring Annual Grantee Reception, unless cancelled due to continuing COVID19 concerns. Further information will be communicated at the time of the grant award notification.

Funding Information

  • Grant amount: $17,700
  • Any individual or organization may be funded for a maximum of three consecutive years.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Types of grants. A Local Cultural Council may approve grants for a broad range of projects and programs, such as operating support, ticket subsidies, field trips, artist residencies, public art, fellowships, community events/programs, site specific projects, and other activities, based on local priorities. Each Local Cultural Council determines its own local eligibility requirements based on a community engagement process.
  • Program eligibility. Applicants may apply for grants for programs that take place during an 18-month window of eligibility from July 1, preceding the application deadline in October, through December 31 of the following year. This means that applicants may apply for projects that have already happened or which happen prior to grant announcements, with the knowledge that funding is not guaranteed. Local Cultural Councils are authorized to establish a smaller window of eligibility; if they do so, they must publish the eligible dates in their council guidelines.
  • Applicant eligibility. Applicants must reside or be located in Massachusetts. Local Cultural Councils may accept applications from anyone included in the following list:
    • Individuals
    • Incorporated private nonprofit organizations
    • Unincorporated associations that can establish a nonprofit objective
    • Public schools, libraries, other municipal agencies, and the Local Cultural Council itself
    • Religious organizations.

2023 Local Guidelines

  • Preference will be given to Brookline-based nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and to local individuals who work in the arts or humanities.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they have been engaged in the kind of activity for which they are seeking funds for at least two years. Evidence may be of previous sale or exhibition of work, performances, reviews, etc.
  • Two broad categories of application are considered:
    • Brookline Community Awards: Applications for projects to enhance the educational and/or cultural experience of Brookline residents.
    • Dissemination Grants: Applications by artists with a body of completed work for funds to defray the expense of publishing, exhibiting, or performing their work.
