Details:

The Youth Fund is comprised of several funds including the American Youth Services Fund; the Community Endowment Fund; the Haigh-Scatena Youth Leadership, Empowerment & Advocacy Fund; Jim Levine Youth Endowment Fund; the John and Sandra Mayfield Family Economic Development Fund; the Mendocino Coast Youth Mentorship Fund; the Rainbow Fund; and the Vocational Education Fund.

Funding Priorities 

Funding priorities include, but are not limited to:

  • Workforce and Leadership Development
    • Collaborative projects between businesses and educational institutions focusing on job training and certification programs for students interested in local employment opportunities.
    • K-16 entrepreneurial curriculum/classes.
    • Work readiness programs for high school students interested in employment opportunities in local business.
    • High school, community college, and nonprofit technical education and vocational programs including, but not limited to equipment purchases, the deployment of innovative teaching techniques, and tools for students to successfully embark on careers upon graduation.
  • Service Learning Projects
    • Grassroots youth programs with a focus on prevention that support service and volunteerism and utilize existing resources with the potential to be self-sustaining.
    • Programs that promote youth leadership, mentorship, and empowerment.
  • Health and Well-being for Youth
    • Programs and organizations that promote the physical safety, health, and mental wellbeing of young with diverse sexual orientations and genders including, but not limited to: LGBTQIAA+ persons as well as their family and friends through support, education, and advocacy; and to support programs and organizations that work to end discriminations and secure equal civil human rights.
    • Encouraging personal enrichment and spiritual exploration among disadvantaged youth and young adults within group experiences in Mendocino County in the natural outdoor environment, including, but not limited to: activities and trips led by schools, camps, naturalists, nonprofit organizations, tribal communities, and spiritual organizations.
    • Supporting projects and organizations on the Mendocino Coast that improve the quality of life for youth to help all to develop a healthy mindset and to make positive contributions to the world.
    • Providing Mendocino County youth with travel opportunities that allow them to experience the natural world and culture outside of Mendocino County.

Funding Information

  • Total Funding Available: $50,000;
  • Grant range $1,000-$5,000.

Eligibility Criteria  

All applicant organizations must:

  • Serve residents of Mendocino County or applicants not headquartered in Mendocino County must ensure that all grant dollars requested are spent within the County.
  • Be legally chartered in California and in possession of a determination letter from the IRS declaring the organization a public charity that is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3); or be a school district, tribe, or special district (e.g., community services, recreation, fire protection); or have an aligned mission with a fiscal sponsor.
  • Have one year of operational history after receiving charitable status.
  • Conduct business without discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, or religious affiliation.
  • Eligible project expenses may include indirect or administration costs.
