Career Opportunity Grants are designed to provide financial assistance to professional artists, arts educators and professionals engaged in arts administration for travel to in-state, national, or international events, programs or seminars; and for other activities that will contribute to the strength of the applicant’s professional standing or skill.

These cash awards help artists and other arts professionals take advantage of impending, concrete opportunities that will significantly advance their work or careers. The awards are for unique, short-term opportunities that do not constitute routine completion of work in progress.
The Alaska State Council on the Arts intends to support a broad range of activities through this program. The following list does not include all possible opportunities available for support, but it does illustrate the range of activities for which artists can receive assistance:
- advanced study with a significant mentor (not related to any degree);
- travel associated with a career opportunity (computed at most economical and direct route)
- contracting of professional services for a specific opportunity
- rental of equipment, instruments, or working space for a unique artistic opportunity.
- materials to complete work scheduled for a gallery exhibition, performance, publication, etc., that will have a significant impact on the artist’s career
- freight and shipping costs associated with an exhibition or presentation of applicant’s work
- travel to meet with a publisher after agreement has been signed to publish work.
Funding Information
Awards in this category usually range from $300 – $1000. A career opportunity grant will provide not more than one half of the applicant’s cash expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
Visual, literary, performing, and traditional artists with professional standing may apply.
Applicants must:
- be an Alaskan resident
- be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
- not be enrolled as a full-time student during the period of the grant
- not have received a Career Opportunity Grant in the preceding state fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).
