Grants to support Farmers impacted by Storms and Flooding in Vermont

Dated: August 24, 2023

The Vermont Community Foundation has announced the Farm Disaster Relief to farmers affected by the devastating flooding this summer.

Donor Name: The Vermont Community Foundation

State: Vermont

County:  All Counties

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 09/06/2023

Size of the Grant: Up to $10,000

Details:

The Farm Disaster Relief Grant Program addresses the critical needs of Vermont farms that sustained damage from the historic July storms and flooding. The program will help farms continue or return to production.

The Farm Disaster Relief Grant Program will be funded with up to $1 million from the VT Flood Response & Recovery Fund 2023, which has raised more than $6.1 million and awarded more than $2 million since it was created by the Vermont Community Foundation last month.

The Farm Disaster Relief Program is designed to help farms that sustained damage stay in production or return to production. More than 18,000 acres of farmland was affected by flooding that washed away soil, spoiled crops, and damaged greenhouses, barns, and equipment. The disaster threatened a way of life and an economic sector that is the backbone of many rural communities.

The Vermont Community Foundation will award up to $1 million from the Vermont Flood Response & Recovery Fund 2023 to support Vermont farms. Farms directly impacted by the July 2023 storms and flooding may seek funding though the Farm Disaster Relief Grant Program. For those losses not otherwise covered by insurance or able to be covered by sources of income, grant awards can support:

  • Replacement of seed, feed, livestock, supplies or equipment.
  • Infrastructure and/or capital repairs.
  • Loss of revenue due to closure or damage.
  • Outstanding bills including farm mortgage costs, land lease payments, utility payments, or animal feed bills.
  • Unexpected expenses related to storm and flood impacts.

Funding Information

Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to farms that have applied and are eligible, as available funds allow.

Eligibility Criteria

A farm will be considered eligible if it is:

  • Located in Vermont and the land is owned or leased by a Vermont resident(s).
  • Committed to remaining in business.
  • Has at least 20 percent of income listed on its Schedule F form in 2022 or is a startup farm that can demonstrate its investment and potential for growth.

This grant program will prioritize:

  • Farmers who identify or self-identify as part of a vulnerable or marginalized population.
  • Farms that will not be receiving any other flood assistance.
