Greater Good: Humanities in Academia Grants – Florida

Dated: March 29, 2023

Florida colleges and universities are encouraged to apply for up to $10,000 to support community programming (either in-person or virtual) that aim to broaden the public’s awareness of the humanities and what it means to be human.

Donor Name: Florida Humanities

States: Florida

County: All Counties

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 05/31/2023

Size of the Grant: Up to $10,000

Grant Duration: 1 year

Details:

The humanities focus on exploring what it means to be human, allowing us to better understand and share their experiences, values, and dreams.  For many, access to the humanities began in college, where scholars and thought-leaders challenged us to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask questions. Here at Florida Humanities, they strive to support their colleagues-in-the-humanities at universities and colleges spark constructive dialogue by bolstering their engaging humanities programming and increasing accessibility to diverse audiences both within and beyond the campus community for the greater good.

Funding Information

  • Funding Amount: Up to $10,000
  • Contract Period: July 5, 2023 – July 5, 2024

Eligibility Criteria

  • Higher Education departments (i.e. Department of History), Humanities Centers, Institutes, and Programs associated with Florida colleges and universities are eligible to apply. Only one application per Department or Program is accepted to apply per round, and only three applications per institution are accepted to apply per cycle. For example, while there may be three applications submitted from a university, they must not be from the same department (i.e. Department of History).
  • Eligible programs may include, but are by no means limited to, town halls, reading and discussion groups, exhibits (in-person and virtual) with public programming, community conversations, lecture and speaker series, or other engaging public humanities programming.
  • Eligible applicant organizations must note:
    • A Federal-ID number is required to apply.
    • Have a Unique Entity ID (SAM) to apply.
    • Not have another Florida Humanities Greater Good: Humanities in Academia open. Organizations must close out their current grant award prior to submitting another proposal.

Eligible Programs

  • Public humanities programming actively engages the public and fosters constructive dialogues grounded in humanities disciplines, in conversation or consultation with a humanities scholar. While they know great humanities research and work is being conducted at institutions across the state, this critical information not always accessible to the public. This funding opportunity was designed to promote a way for all audiences to actively engage with current humanities work being done at the higher education level. A key component of this grant is engaging the community by partnering with nonacademic organizations and/or bringing programs off-campus and into the community.
  • Eligible programs may include, but are not limited to town halls, reading and discussion groups, exhibits with public programing, community conversations, lecture and speaker series, or other engaging public humanities programming.
  • All Projects Must:
    • Inspire constructive dialogue with the public.
    • Involve humanities scholars and other subject-area experts.
    • Be free and widely available to the public (even virtually).
    • Actively engage a diverse audience and community partners, within and beyond the campus community.
    • Demonstrate the relevance of the humanities topic for a Florida audience.
