The following are representative, but not exclusive examples of projects which could be recipients of the Alexandra Smith Fund-In Support of Native American Treaty Rights grants:
- Independently produced new media projects by or about native Americans or other indigenous people
- Independently produced media projects which will enlarge appreciation and understanding of indigenous rights
- Independently initiated projects to encourage and develop leadership in the recognition and promotion of indigenous rights and wisdom.

Grants generally range from $500 to $1,000.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply for funding, an organization must:
- be classified as a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; or classified as an organization under Section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code; and
- be located in or provide service to residents within the seven counties of northeast Minnesota (Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis) and/or Bayfield, Douglas, and Ashland counties in northwestern Wisconsin. Additional service organizations, outside of the above region, must be recommended by the Donor Advisor.
