The Mississippi Humanities Council is committed to fostering the public’s understanding of historical, literary and philosophical perspectives on human experience. In the belief that learning about the past and interpreting the present will allow society to provide a better future for everyone, the Council seeks to create and foster opportunities for the people of this state to understand themselves and others and to place their lives in the larger context of the human condition. A principal means of achieving this goal is awarding grants to nonprofit organizations which plan and sponsor humanities activities for the benefit of Mississippians.
Grants may be used to support public humanities programs, exhibits, the planning of larger projects, and the development of original productions in film, television, radio or online resources. The MHC also offers special grants to support oral history projects around the state.
The Mississippi Humanities Council especially encourages proposals related to the MHC’s 50th anniversary theme of “Reflecting Mississippi.
In 2022, the MHC will celebrate 50 years of serving the people of Mississippi. “Reflecting Mississippi” projects will focus on the diverse stories of state. These may include but aren’t limited to: local history; Mississippi literature; stories of underrepresented communities; parts of history and culture that have often not been reflected in mainstream narratives; and how major national and global events have shaped Mississippi. Projects may explore where we have been and who we are in 2022. Projects may also examine how our narratives have, or have not, reflected Mississippi.

Eligibility Criteria
MHC grants are intended to support projects that use humanities disciplines to increase understanding of the human experience. Project activities are primarily intended to serve Mississippians and must be free and open to the public. Organizations or groups that apply for grants from MHC must be constituted for nonprofit purposes. It is not necessary that such organizations or groups be incorporated or have tax-exempt status. MHC does not award grants to for-profit entities. As per federal rule 2 CFR 25, grant applicants must obtain a DUNS number. Beginning April 4, 2022, the federal government will transition from the use of the DUNS Number to a new Unique Entity ID (UEI) as the primary means of identification required to receive federal funding. Organizations seeking MHC funds will be REQUIRED to provide the Unique Entity ID (UEI) for grant applications starting April 4, 2022. Typical organizations eligible for grants include:
- Private nonprofit organizations
- Institutions of higher education
- State, local and federally recognized Indian tribal governments
- Community and cultural organizations
- Educational and professional groups
- Museums
- Libraries
- Public agencies
- Non-commercial radio and television stations
