Moving the Needle Grants to address Food insecurity in Massachusetts

At Project Bread, they believe that by working together, Massachusetts can be the first hunger-free state in the nation! Food insecurity looks different in every community, and local partners and residents are the experts in addressing these challenges. Furthermore, at Project Bread, they believe they must listen and learn from those impacted to inform change. Hence, they seek to support projects that authentically center community voices and people with lived experience within their proposed work.

“Moving the Needle ” community investment goal is to leverage organizations’ agency and efforts to fight hunger and food insecurity in their communities.

“Moving the Needle” is looking for projects addressing food insecurity that promote systemic change with the most meaningful, positive, and sustainable impact on local communities. This community investment focuses on three priority areas: Policy and Advocacy; Education to Broaden the Use of Federal Nutrition Programs; and Innovation.

Funding Information

Systemic and sustainable change takes time and intentionality. Hence, “Moving the needle” community investments are a two-year program with annual installments of up to $30,000.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Project Bread invites organizations that align with Project Bread’s deep commitment to ending hunger for communities across Massachusetts to apply.
  • Local grassroots organizations, community organizers, faith communities, after-school programs, and other non-traditional groups are welcome to submit proposals for community projects located in the cities of Malden, New Bedford, Lynn, Lowell, Holyoke and Worcester. Please note that at this time, only applications from these locations will be considered for this grant.
  • This fund is not intended for emergency food distribution but can be used to deepen relationships between individuals using food emergency programs.
