New Work Grant for Queens-based Individual Artists (New York)

Dated: December 23, 2021

The New Work Grant supports emerging Queens-based individual artists, collaborations between artists, and unincorporated artist collectives of all artistic disciplines in their creation and public sharing of “new work” — work that has not been produced or work-in-progress that has not been presented to a public audience before.

Donor Name: Queens Council on the Arts

State: New York

City: Queens

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 02/15/2022

Size of the Grant: $3,000

Details:

QAF is committed to furthering racial, cultural, and economic equity in its funding practices. Projects created by BIPOC artists, immigrants, and first-time grant applicants, and projects created by and for people living in Southeast Queens, Eastern Queens, and South Queens neighborhoods have historically received limited or low-funding in past QAF grant cycles and will be prioritized in the 2022 panel review process.

Funding Information

New Work Grants offer project-based financial support and are awarded at $3,000.

Project Eligibility

  • Proposed projects must include a public component that takes place in Queens* within the 2022 calendar year and provides Queens community members with the opportunity to experience dynamic, easily accessible arts and cultural events. Projects with public components that are culturally relevant, free or sliding-scale to participate in, and in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act will be prioritized.
  • Public Components can include, but are not limited to: exhibitions, performances, festivals, screenings, readings, workshops.

*Due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, projects with live virtual public components are permissible, as long virtual events are targeted towards local Queens audiences or participants. Applicants proposing virtual public components still must be based in Queens.

What the New Work Grant can Fund (Eligible Grant Expenses):

  • Artists’ Fees and compensation.
  • Technical Assistance fees (i.e. videographer, audio editor, translators and interpreters, etc.)
  • Marketing and publicity costs.
  • Planning and preparation expenses for a proposed event.
  • Supplies and materials needed for the execution of the project.
    • The cost of supplies and materials may not exceed $1,000. This can include:
    • Art supplies, sheet music, hardware, memory cards, and other consumable equipment.
    • Equipment, software, subscriptions, and training related to the creation and promotion of virtual programming (total item cost may not exceed a $1,000). Examples included: cameras, lighting equipment, subscriptions associated with virtual programming, and training to utilize these tools.
  • Venue rental for the project (general home/studio rent is not eligible).

Who can Apply?

  • Individual artists or lead applicants who reside in or have a long-term studio in Queens and are 18+ years of age.
  • Artist collectives or collaborations must designate a Queens-based artist as the “lead applicant” who applies on behalf of the group and meets all eligibility requirements
  • Project disciplines can include, but are not limited to: Music & Sound Art, Theater & Performance, Dance and movement, Photography, Film, Video, & Media, Literature (including Poetry & Spoken Word), Visual arts, Craft/Fiber Arts, Folk Arts, Community-Engaged Art, and Multidisciplinary Arts.
