North State Equity Fund to support Grassroot Organizations in California

Dated: October 6, 2023

The North State Equity Fund (NSEF) is a collaboration between United Way of Northern California, The McConnell Foundation, and S.H. Cowell Foundation.

Donor Name: United Way of Northern California

State: California

County:

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 10/20/2023

Size of the Grant: $10,000

Details:

United Way supports efforts that promote racial justice, social equity, and deepen collaborations between organizations or emerging groups doing this important work in the North State.

In this grant cycle, NSEF anticipates distributing up to $100,000 to support positive efforts towards inter-cultural dialogue and equal opportunity in Northern California. They are offering grants of $3,000 to $10,000 in general operating support to groups and organizations that address issues around racial justice or the needs of a particular racial/cultural group.

It encourages partnerships between organizations and submission of joint applications where appropriate. They affirm the work which is already being done and see this as an opportunity for your group to dig deeper roots, create strong alliances or collaborations, and/or to strengthen your infrastructure. While 501(c)3 status is not required to receive NSEF funds, applications from Individuals and for-profit entities will not be considered. Additionally, organizations that received funding for Peer Mentor time are ineligible for the 2023 NSEF grant.

The application design, grant decisions, and relationships with grantees are guided by a desire to advance awareness of interconnectedness in a broader movement and the following key values:

  • Racial justice and healing;
  • Collaboration, shared learning, cross-cultural healing, and understanding by all stakeholders;
  • Innovation in methods and strategies;
  • A productive learning process, which may include failure and risk-taking;
  • Honesty, openness, and trust among partners;
  • Accountability to partners and the community served;
  • Supporting work of groups with less access to resources and who are historically under-represented; and
  • Commitment to equitable organizational and systemic change.

Priority Areas

Through its grant-making, the North State Equity Fund seeks to:

  • Prioritize support for grassroots organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and engaged in “bottom-up” strategies;
  • Prioritize programs led by people who identify with the communities they serve (i.e., race, class, background);
  • Encourage and build capacity for authentic collaboration, recognizing that “collaboration” can take different forms in various contexts;
  • Establish platforms for the growth of youth leadership;
  • Facilitate programs and assistance specifically designed for undocumented community members; and
  • Generate opportunities for advancement and leadership development for BIPOC individuals.

Funding Information

Within the maximum $10,000 award amount, applicants are encouraged to describe the full cost of their effort and request the amount needed to be effective in achieving their goals.

Eligibility Criteria

This fund is available to organizations or groups based in one or more of these nine counties: Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, or Trinity.
