Office of Gun Violence Prevention Grant Funding to help reduce Violence in Colorado Communities

Dated: January 12, 2023

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention within the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is now accepting applications for new grants that will fund projects to prevent gun violence across Colorado.

Donor Name: State of Colorado

State: Colorado

County: All Counties

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 02/09/2023

Size of the Grant: $10,000

Details:

The new grant program is designed to fund projects that conduct community-based gun violence prevention initiatives that are evidence-informed and have demonstrated promise at reducing violence. Funds may be used for education, training and community programs regarding topics including responsible gun ownership practices, safe storage, existing laws, mental health, and substance use resources.

Grant Priorities

  • Increasing the awareness of, and educating the general public about, state and federal laws and existing resources relating to gun violence prevention, including the availability of, and the process for requesting, an extreme risk protection order pursuant to Title 13, Article 14.5; the availability of, and the process for requesting, a protection order pursuant to Title 13, Article 14; how to report a lost or stolen firearm, including reporting requirements in state law.
  • Safe and responsible gun ownership, including increasing Coloradans’ awareness of and compliance with state and federal law.
  • Developing and providing materials and training resources to local law enforcement agencies, health-care providers, and educators to assist those agencies, providers, and educators with educating the public about firearm-related laws and resources.
  • Developing and/or providing training or programming, for priority communities, to increase access to mental health and substance misuse resources and how to refer people to needed mental health and substance use treatment services, including suicide prevention, social-emotional intelligence development, conflict resolution skills, grief management, and resilience development.
  • Providing pro social or economic opportunities for community members to engage in alternative activities or build protective social, emotional, or job skills (e.g. youth or adult career or trade training, after school programs, social norm changing strategies, etc.).
  • For efforts focused on community or interpersonal gun violence prevention, initiatives should also consider these principles:
    • Interrupt cycles of gun violence, trauma, and retaliation.
    • Reduce gun violence without contributing to mass incarceration.
