ProsperOK Community Investment Committee Fund – Oklahoma

Dated: August 23, 2023

ProsperOK’s Community Investment Committee (CIC) is launching its second round of community-directed grantmaking!

Donor Name: ProsperOK

State: Oklahoma

County: All Counties

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 09/29/2023

Size of the Grant: Up to $25,000

Grant Duration: 12 months

Details:

The CIC is looking to fund grassroots organizations in Oklahoma using advocacy, organizing and civic engagement to promote equity, economic opportunity and racial justice for individuals most harmed by the criminal-legal system.

The Community Investment Committee (CIC) is reducing the distance between grassroots organizations and funding via community-directed grantmaking. The CIC has governed a portion of ProsperOK’s grantmaking. It has granted $270,000 to 12 Tulsa County organizations serving communities disproportionately impacted by the criminal legal system – with an emphasis on engaging Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) in providing services and/or strengthening movements. The Community Investment Committee sources potential grantees, assesses grant proposals and awards grants, and informs ways for grantmaking to become more transformative over time. In this second round, the CIC will govern $250,000 in grantmaking to organizations serving communities throughout Oklahoma.

Priority Considerations for Funding Organizations

In addition to the required eligibility criteria listed, organizations that meet the following criteria will receive priority consideration for funding:

  • Governed and managed by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) e.g., 51% or more of their board members and 51% or more of their staff leaders are BIPOC.
  • Governed and managed by Individuals who have been directly harmed by the criminal legal system e.g., 51% or more of their board members and 51% or more of their staff leaders are individuals who have been directly harmed by the criminal legal system.
  • Grassroots organization working in areas of Oklahoma most harmed by the criminal legal system.
  • Organization using advocacy, organizing and civic engagement to promote equity, or economic opportunity, or racial justice for folks living and working in areas of Oklahoma most harmed by the criminal legal system.
  • Organizations working in alliance and collaboration with other organizations serving and promoting equity, or economic opportunity, or racial justice for lower-income communities, communities of color and other marginalized groups most harmed by the criminal legal system in Oklahoma

Funding Information

  • Applicants may request funds up to $25,000 for general operating support. Requesting less than $25,000 will not enhance the probability of receiving a grant. CIC’s support may be used to secure matching grants, but CIC will not require matching funds.
  • Within 12 months of receipt of the funds, successful applicants must be able to:
    • Expend or encumber the funds and provide proof of expenditure or encumbrance of the funds.
    • Provide written information on how the grant funds helped or will help the organization serve and promote equity, or economic opportunity, or racial justice for lower-income communities, communities of color and other marginalized groups harmed by the criminal legal system in Oklahoma.

Eligibility Criteria

The proposal process is open to any organization serving people in Oklahoma that meets the following criteria:

  • Are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or have a fiscal sponsorship agreement with a 501(c)(3) organization.
  • Have an annual operating budget of $200,000 or less. (Fiscal Sponsors may have annual operating budgets greater than $200,000.)
  • Can demonstrate how:
    • Fulfilling their mission serves and promotes equity, or economic opportunity, or racial justice for lower-income communities, communities of color and other marginalized groups harmed by the criminal legal system in Oklahoma.
    • They are fulfilling their mission by engaging Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) in providing services and/or strengthening movements e.g., their work includes a power-building and leadership-development strategy that engages communities most harmed by the criminal legal system in defining problems, solutions, and actions.
    • They center racial equity principles in fulfilling their mission.
