Their broader work is aimed at ending generational poverty and closing the racial wealth gap. They also recognize that this work always takes place in the context of specific communities.

Through this investment, UWGLA aims to invest in resident-powered efforts that gather households to strengthen and reclaim their neighborhoods. UWGLA will fund a set of community hubs, which are nonprofit organizations and community groups currently providing care and building power within communities across L.A. County. Care and power efforts that will be supported may vary in population focus, service type, and geography, but all will strive to provide immediate supports that help re-imagine a community-powered social safety net in local neighborhoods or build up household and community wealth and ownership long-term. Applicants may identify as being a care and/or power hub:

Examples of specific supports include food, rent, utilities, transportation, childcare, mentoring/tutoring, clothing, hygiene, healthcare/mental health, public benefits, and tax credits.
  • Community Power Hub: Efforts designed to establish greater resident agency, community ownership, and the building of community wealth. Examples include specific organizing campaigns, community land trusts, housing and worker cooperatives, self-organized student unions, community information networks, public space improvements, microenterprise supports for neighborhood services, and lending/investment circles.
