The Partnership Grant Program is one of United Way’s primary tools for sustaining close ties to the communities they serve and for learning from organizations and leaders in their focus areas: Early Learning, Career Pathways, Financial Empowerment, and Community Resiliency.
They believe that:
- Their ability to address poverty in their region requires deep attunement to the nonprofit sector and the communities that they serve.
- High-trust relationships with a network of deeply knowledgeable and richly diverse organizations will strengthen their impact.
- Together we can build collective knowledge, identify opportunities for collaboration, and drive informed solutions to their region’s persistent challenges.
The grant application and review process focus primarily on four factors:
Organizational Impact – mission and approach to change;
- Focus Areas & Experience – expertise and approach to learning;
- Community Engagement – knowledge of people and neighborhoods served; and
- Collaboration – experience and interest in working with other nonprofits and/or funders.
Focus Areas
Through the Partnership Grant Program, United Way aims to partner with organizations that can deepen their knowledge of their focus areas and the communities that they serve. Their four focus areas encompass many fields of practice and nonprofit practitioners help keep us informed. In particular, they are seeking organizations with experience in the following focus areas and fields:
- Early Learning: Partners that help ensure academic success, with services including early childhood education, out-of-school-time programs, literacy programs, career preparation, student resilience, and advocacy for equitable education and access.
- Career Pathways: Partners that support economic mobility through career readiness, adult education, workforce development, industry partnerships, and entrepreneurship services, as well as advocating for equitable access to services and capital.
- Financial Empowerment: Partners that support people experiencing poverty increase their cash-flow, decrease harmful debt, increase short-term-savings, and increase access to assets and long-term affordable savings opportunities, such as homeownership, through services including financial and housing counseling, tax preparation, benefits enrollment, and matched savings programs.
- Community Resiliency: Partners that build more resilient communities by helping to meet residents’ basic needs, including food distribution, violence prevention, healthcare access, digital inclusion, rent/mortgage/utility assistance, legal aid, and referrals to social services.
Funding Information
The program provides unrestricted grants of $50,000 per year for two years.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to receive a grant, an organization must meet the following criteria:
- Be a 501(c)(3) public charity or be fiscally sponsored by one
- Your organization’s mission focus is on alleviating poverty in their region
- Offer programs/activities/services that align with at least one of the above mentioned United Way focus areas
- Provide services for one or more of the following counties:
- Atlantic County (NJ)
- Burlington County (NJ)
- Camden County (NJ)
- Cape May County (NJ)
- Chester County (PA)
- Cumberland County (NJ)
- Delaware County (PA)
- Montgomery County (PA)
- Philadelphia County (PA)
