West Virginia Humanities Council announces Mini Grants

Humanities Council Minigrants support projects that request $2,000 or less, including small projects, single events, lectures, small museum exhibits, brochures, consultation needs, and planning for more complex projects

Details:

Minigrants have supported projects including workshops by West Virginia authors at Daniels Elementary School in Raleigh County, permanent exhibits at the Entler Hotel museum in Shepherdstown, and a Wayne County quilt trail.

What WVHC funds

Allowable expenses for humanities projects and programs include the following:

  • Honoraria for scholars
  • Project-specific (i.e. non-regular) staff salaries
  • Travel costs including per diems, mileage and lodging
  • Supplies and materials
  • Publicity and printing costs
  • Postage and telephone costs
  • Equipment and facilities rental

Eligible Projects 

Eligible projects must:

  • Be rooted in one or more of the humanities disciplines
  • Involve qualified humanities scholars or expert practitioners in the project, as direct advisors
  • Be sponsored by a nonprofit organization
  • Provide accurate budget requests, reflecting the actual costs of the project
  • Secure dollar-per-dollar matching funds
  • Provide a 25% cash match (for grant requests of more than $2,000)
  • Provide a comprehensive and adequate plan for publicity and dissemination of information
  • Be open to or accessible by public audiencesre
  • Provide a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the project
  • Comply with federal nondiscrimination statutes

Eligibility Criteria 

  • The West Virginia Humanities Council seeks proposals from nonprofit organizations that offer humanities-centered public programming for West Virginia audiences.
  • For grants and programming purposes, the term “humanities” encompasses the study of language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; law and jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; art history; and some aspects of the social sciences
