Community Journalism combines the professionalism and far-reaching network of traditional media with the internal knowledge and connections of local communities to create more accessible and collaborative research, sourcing, reporting, and news making.
From identifying underreported stories to shaping how they are told, community journalists produce local news that better informs the public, strengthens their neighborhoods, and bolsters civic participation.
Eligibility Criteria
To participate in this program, you must be a D.C. resident over the age of 18 and be able to commit to the entire 14-week program and the final event. Programming will take place every Monday evening from February 10 through May 12, 2025, with a culminating celebration on May 19, 2024. Seven (7) in-person, two-hour workshops will cover basic print journalism skills and best practices, including how to:
- Find credible information and sources
- Conduct interviews
- Outline and write news stories
- Edit articles
- Pitch stories to local media.
