They are seeking early-career digital, print, video, audio, photo and multimedia journalists for the California Local News Fellowship to work in local newsrooms across the state. The fellows earn a full-time salary and benefits from the University of California for two years and receive intensive mentoring, training, and support from experienced journalism leaders.
The fellowship program partners with newsrooms throughout the state that are seeking to meet their communities’ information needs with original local news coverage. They prioritize news organizations operating in underserved communities, including for-profit, nonprofit, public media, and community and ethnic media outlets. Once newsrooms and fellows are selected into the program, they are paired through a matching process that seeks to meet the needs of individual newsrooms and interests of fellows.
This year they also plan to bring on a small number of video fellows to produce stories in partnership with fellows and newsrooms. Ideal candidates will have strong shooting, editing, and producing skills, along with the ability to create video in a range of formats (quick turnaround news pieces, longer form mini-documentaries, and short social media content). Video fellows will not be assigned to a specific news outlet, but will work as part of a small production team.
