The program enables twenty journalists from Germany, Canada and the USA to gain professional and personal experience in the host country as part of a work grant.
The scholarship holders work for at least two months in a guest editorship of their choice and at the same time have the opportunity to report as correspondents for their home media. In this way they gain an intensive impression of politics, economy and culture as well as of social life and daily journalistic business in the host country.
Funding Information
The German scholarship holders of the Arthur F. Burns program will receive a one-time payment of 4,000 euros from the IJP, Canadian and US scholarship holders will receive $5,500. This includes the costs for the Atlantic flight. The amount should also largely cover travel expenses, meals and accommodation in the host country. A certain amount of personal contribution from the scholarship holders is expected. There is no provision for remuneration for on-site work.
Eligibility Criteria
German applicants send the IJP a detailed curriculum vitae in German or English, a passport photo, a short letter of motivation including journalistic plans in the host country and a journalistic report issued by the department head or editor-in-chief. The report should support the application as proof of journalistic activity and at the same time ensure the leave of absence for the scholarship.
