Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) is seeking applications for the Migrants4Climate (M4C) Award to identify, through a competitive process, innovative initiatives led by, or with migrants’ and diasporas’ involvement, that have a demonstrated climate action impact at the local level.

Details:

A New Decade to Act on Climate Change and Migration is the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Initiative that enhances CVF’s commitment to advance knowledge and action on migration in the context of climate change in countries most vulnerable to climate change.

The M4C Award recognizes innovative initiatives that help mitigate climate change and promote environmental sustainability while integrating migrants and building on migrants and diasporas contributions. Examples of initiatives that can be nominated should include, but are not limited to, clean energy solutions, agroforestry practices, waste management innovation, green and blue jobs, sustainable transportation initiatives, ecosystem preservation, reforestation, nature-based solutions, or climate adaptation strategies.

Vision

  • M4C calls for greater solidarity with and support for migrant and displaced communities most impacted by the adverse effects of climate change.
  • M4C emphasizes the devastating impacts of slow-onset climate change processes and promotes actions that address their migration impacts.
  • M4C considers migrants and diasporas as dynamic actors of climate action and gives visibility to and supports their initiatives.
  • M4C builds a positive narrative about migration to bolster migrants’ and diasporas’ and their communities’ participation and contributions to climate action.

M4C Award 2023 Criteria

Initiatives will be evaluated according to the following criteria

  • Inclusion:
    • Prioritizes inclusion, social equity, and community engagement.
    • Involves migrants, diasporas, and marginalized groups.
    • Focuses on migration or is led by migrants and diasporas.
    • Emphasizes the rights of migrants and their active participation.
    • Enables migrants to contribute to climate action efforts.
    • Showcases how migrants and diasporas drive change and play vital roles in climate-related actions.
  • Innovation:
    • Contributes to climate action.
    • Encompasses diverse activities like clean energy, water management, land rehabilitation, etc.
    • Introduces innovative approaches.
    • Has a potential for future growth and development to address climate change challenges.
  • Impact:
    • Demonstrates measurable and substantial contributions.
    • Focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resilience, advancing sustainable development, etc.
    • Provides quantitative data and individual stories to showcase positive impacts.
    • Showcases tangible effects on a specific community that can be documented or explained.
  • Inspiration:
    • Has scalability and the ability to inspire others.
    • Serves as a model for individuals and organizations.
    • Encourages expansion and enhancement of previous work.
    • Creates new horizons and ideas for future generations to draw inspiration from.

Award Information

  • Selected Initiatives will receive the M4C Award, recognizing their outstanding efforts in the fight against climate change. The Award aims to showcase and inspire innovative and impactful climate action on a global scale. Recipients will receive public recognition and visibility for their achievements, in key processes such as the COP28 under UNFCCC, the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) in the IOM Governing bodies and UN Network on Migration opportunities for collaboration. More information will be shared regarding the Award, the Award ceremony and the Award trophy.

Main Activities

  • M4C activities contribute to key policy processes on migration and climate change:
    • the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM)
    • implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Conference of Parties (COP) under UNFCCC
    • the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD)
    • the Human Rights Council (HRC)
  • Migrants4Climate Award identifies through a competitive process innovative initiatives led by migrants or with migrants’ and diasporas’ involvement that contribute to climate action.
  • M4C activities contribute to key CVF led policy activities on migration and climate change:
    • the Climate Prosperity Plans (CPPs)
    • the Climate Vulnerability Monitor (CVM)
    • the Global Parliamentary Group (GPG)
    • the CVF and V20 Finance work including Loss & Damage Finance

Who can Nominate?

  • Nominations for the M4C Award are fully open to the public and can be submitted through the online form.
  • Climate action initiatives can be undertaken by individuals, private companies, public institutions at local, national, regional and international levels and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). All these entities are eligible to be nominated for the M4C Award.
