The Fundación MAPFRE, a Spanish non-profit institution has launched the 2nd edition of KBr Photo Award, an international biennial award with which it reaffirms its support for artistic creation, publicizing the award winning photographer on the national and international scene, and promoting career with two exhibitions and a catalogue.

Prize Details
- The winner will receive a financial prize of 25,000 euros gross to carry out the selected project within 10 months, counting from the award decision, which will take place in October 2023.
- During this period, the winner will receive advice and will be accompanied by the Fundación MAPFRE photography team.
- In addition to the financial prize, Fundación MAPFRE will produces and organizes an exhibition at Espai 2 of the KBr Barcelona Photo Center, in February 2025, which will show the result of the winning project. The project will also be presented in May of the same year at the Fundación MAPFRE Rooms in Madrid, Spain.
- Along with the exhibition, Fundación MAPFRE will edit a catalogue, in one or more languages, on its own or in collaboration with third parties.
Eligibility Criteria
- The KBr Photo Award is open to national or international photographers, of legal age, who intend to carry out a new photographic project or the conclusion of an already started one, in both cases unpublished, which has not been submitted to any other similar call. The trajectory of the candidates must have at least one individual exhibition or one publication.
- The language of the application can be in Spanish or English.
- The theme is free; however, the proposal that is within the tradition of documentary photography will be valued and will prevail.
Selection Criteria
- A pre-selection committee belonging to Fundación MAPFRE will analyze all entries and select the most suitable ones to be presented to the jury. For this, the criterion of adequacy to the present bases of this regulation will be followed. During the deliberations, if requested, the jury members will have access to the documentation of all entries.
- The winner will be chosen by an international jury made up of 4 prominent members of the art world, as well as Fundación MAPFRE’s Chief Photography Conservator. The jury will make its decision in the month of October 2023.
- Each member of the jury will have a voice and a vote. The names of the jury members will be known when the edition is released. A member of Fundación MAPFRE will act as secretary of the jury.
