Details:

The Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy’s specific purpose is to provide small grants to aspiring PhD students at the dissertation level to support the research they are undertaking for their project.

The Foundation supports projects with a social policy application on either a global or local level.

Funding Information

  • Each grant is worth a total of $10,000; $7,500 is awarded initially and $2,500 upon completion of the project. A Trustees’ Award of an additional $3,000 is given to the project judged as the project with the most innovative approach in theory and/or methodology, or
  • An additional $5,000 is given to the most outstanding overall project for the signature Irving Louis Horowitz award.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be PhD (or DrPH) candidates and be currently working on their dissertation. ​​
  • Applicants must not have received a PhD and must have had their topic approved by their department before applying.
  • No United States citizenship or United States residency is required.
  • Candidates must have received formal departmental approval of their dissertation topic before the application deadline. They do not require proof of approval; however, you will be asked to certify that approval has been granted, and provide the contact information for your dissertation chair.

What is the application process?

  • The process is completely online and designed to be as simple as possible. The online portal makes it easy to initiate an application and return to it later if you need more time to finish it.
  • The process begins with a short eligibility form. Eligible candidates will then be asked to provide a few personal details, as well as contact information for two people who will provide letters of recommendation. You will be asked to provide a short project overview, and a CV. Next, the application requires a longer description of your project. When all information is finalized and both letters of recommendation have been uploaded, you must then submit the application by clicking the “submit” button.
