Stigler Center’s Journalists in Residence Program

Dated: September 20, 2023

With the aim of shaping the next generation of leaders in business reporting, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business has launched the Stigler Center’s Journalists in Residence Program.

Donor Name: University of Chicago Booth School of Business

Country: All Countries

Type of Grant: Program

Deadline: 10/15/2023

Size of the Grant: $14,000

Details:

The program provides a transformative learning experience for journalists working in all forms of media around the world. Participants spend approximately 12 weeks on the Hyde Park campus, auditing classes, participating in Stigler Center events, collaborating with peers, and networking with the university’s scholars.

The Stigler Center’s mission includes efforts to enrich the public debate on matters related to the interaction between politics and the economy.

The media plays a crucial role in that effort by gathering and disseminating information on the behavior of different players in the market and uncovering potential wrongdoings.

Program Features

  • The program offers exclusive seminars, opportunities to study with world-class faculty, and the chance to network with colleagues from around the world. Details include:
    • Reimbursement for economy-class airfare to/from Chicago and SEVIS and visa application fees.
    • A stipend of $14,000 to cover living expenses over the 12-week program.
    • Training in business fundamentals at Chicago Booth.
    • Participation in seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and across the university.
    • An opportunity to write for the ProMarket publication.
    • Opportunities to collaborate with Booth faculty, students, and fellow program participants.
    • Designated study space.
    • Certificate of participation upon successful completion of program.

Program Expectations

  • Program participants are expected to:
    • Audit three classes.
    • Attend and actively participate in classes and complete all required readings and assignments.
    • Participate in Stigler lectures, lunches, and social events as well as other events recommended by the center.
    • Sign a letter of agreement with the center to indicate that the program guidelines and expectations are mutually agreed upon.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Editors and freelancers are welcome to apply.
  • Journalists working in all forms of media are welcome to apply.
  • You can continue to work during the program but be aware that the program has a heavy workload. In addition to completing all course assignments, you’ll also attend weekly Stigler-organized seminars, lunch workshops, events, and social activities, which make for a very full schedule.
  • You can write for the digital publication, but you are not required to.
  • They recommend that applicants have at least a few years of post-degree working experience in the field.
  • Submit articles that are indicative of your best work. Articles on political economy and Stigler-related topics are preferred but not required.
