Empowering Future Leaders: CU Denver Partners with Girl Scouts of Colorado

Dated: December 7, 2024

A historic partnership has been established between the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) and the Girl Scouts of Colorado, aimed at empowering young women who have achieved the prestigious Gold Award. This collaboration will guarantee admission to CU Denver for Colorado Girl Scouts who graduate high school with a 3.0 GPA and have earned the Gold Award, which recognizes exceptional leadership and community impact.

Key Takeaways

  • Guaranteed Admission: Gold Award Girl Scouts with a 3.0 GPA will receive guaranteed admission to CU Denver.
  • Celebration Event: The partnership will kick off with a celebration and campus tour on February 28.
  • Focus on Leadership: The Gold Award signifies a commitment to leadership and community service.

Partnership Details

The partnership is set to officially launch on February 28, with a celebratory event that includes a guided tour of the CU Denver campus for Girl Scouts pursuing the Gold Award. This initiative is designed to provide a clear pathway for these young leaders to further their education and continue their community impact.

The Gold Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouts, requiring recipients to complete a significant project that addresses a community issue. For instance, Britney Berlin, a recent Gold Award recipient, created a website to help young adults learn essential life skills, showcasing the kind of impactful projects that the award encourages.

Voices from the Community

Leanna Clark, CEO of Girl Scouts of Colorado, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good. We’re so grateful to partner with CU Denver to offer these outstanding Girl Scouts another opportunity to impact their community and become the leaders we know they can be."

Ashley Weatherspoon, assistant vice chancellor for recruitment and admissions at CU Denver, added, "At CU Denver, we see Gold Award Girl Scouts as driven changemakers who share our values of service, leadership, and lifelong learning. This partnership is our way of recognizing their hard work and commitment to their communities by providing them a clear path to further their education and impact."

Inclusivity for Younger Scouts

The kickoff celebration will also welcome younger Girl Scouts working towards their Bronze and Silver Awards. These awards encourage teamwork and community service, with Bronze Award candidates (grades 4-5) completing projects that address local needs, while Silver Award candidates (grades 6-8) tackle more complex initiatives.

About the Organizations

The Girl Scouts of Colorado is dedicated to empowering girls from all backgrounds to discover their strengths and rise to new challenges. The organization fosters an environment where girls can be themselves and work together to build a better world.

CU Denver stands as the state’s premier public urban research university, offering over 100 top-ranked degree programs and contributing significantly to the Colorado economy. With a commitment to education and community service, CU Denver is poised to support the next generation of leaders through this partnership with the Girl Scouts.

This collaboration not only highlights the importance of education and leadership but also reinforces the value of community service among young women, paving the way for future generations to make a lasting impact.
