Empowering Veterans: Local Nonprofit Transforms Lives After Life-Changing Injuries

Dated: November 11, 2024

In a heartwarming initiative, a local nonprofit organization is making significant strides in helping veterans regain their independence after suffering life-altering injuries. The Semper Fi & America’s Fund has been a beacon of hope for many, including Chad Ohmer, a former Marine whose life was forever changed during his service in Afghanistan.

Key Takeaways

  • Semper Fi & America’s Fund supports veterans with life-changing injuries.
  • Chad Ohmer, a Marine veteran, shares his journey of recovery and newfound passions.
  • The nonprofit emphasizes the importance of community and camaraderie among veterans.

Chad Ohmer’s Journey

Chad Ohmer served as a Marine from 2008 until 2015. His life took a drastic turn in 2012 when an improvised explosive device severely injured his leg, leading to an amputation. Upon returning home, Ohmer faced uncertainty and a lack of direction until he discovered the Semper Fi & America’s Fund.

For over 20 years, this nonprofit has dedicated itself to supporting veterans, helping them navigate the challenges of life after sustaining critical injuries or illnesses. The organization not only provided financial assistance to Ohmer and his family but also played a crucial role in helping him find new passions that contributed to his physical and mental healing.

Finding New Passions

Ohmer’s determination to live life to the fullest led him to compete on the United States Para Alpine team, where he discovered a new passion for adaptive sports. He later joined the Cincinnati Icebreakers Sled Hockey team, which is designed for individuals with physical disabilities who cannot skate in a traditional manner. This team competes against other midwestern teams throughout the year, fostering a sense of community and teamwork.

"Semper Fi & America’s Fund asked what I needed for the sport and has been there since day one at the hospital to support us," Ohmer expressed, highlighting the vital role the nonprofit played in his recovery.

The Importance of Community

Many veterans experience feelings of isolation after returning from service. Ohmer noted that he and his fellow veterans often miss the camaraderie and brotherhood that military service provided. Being part of a team has helped fill that void, offering a support system that is crucial for mental health.

Ohmer believes that without organizations like Semper Fi & America’s Fund, the suicide rate among veterans would be significantly higher. He encourages veterans to seek out support, stating, "There’s nothing I can’t do as a person with disabilities. Get out there and try it; plenty of people have figured it out and paved the path, and you just need to walk down it."

A Message for Veterans

This Veterans Day, Ohmer wants every veteran to know that they are not alone. Support is available if they are willing to seek it out. He urges fellow veterans, "Thank you for your service, keep fighting the good fight, and know that we’re here to support everybody that needs it."

Ongoing Support for Veterans

Semper Fi & America’s Fund continues to assist thousands of veterans in leading full and independent lives. In a remarkable show of support, The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation and Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) have partnered with the nonprofit for the 13th consecutive year in the Double Down for Veterans Match Campaign. This initiative will match every donation made to the fund up to $10 million through the end of the year, ensuring that more veterans receive the help they need to thrive.
