Empowering Voices: Community and Health Advocacy Events Unite for Change

Dated: February 9, 2025

On February 6, 2025, two significant advocacy events took place, highlighting the importance of community engagement in health and recovery. The Washington Recovery Alliance hosted its Recovery Advocacy Day in Olympia, while Cummins Inc. partnered with Girls Inc. for the fifth annual Girls Inc. Advocacy Day in Indianapolis. Both events aimed to empower individuals and foster connections with lawmakers to drive meaningful change.

Key Takeaways

  • Washington Recovery Alliance’s Recovery Advocacy Day: Over 300 recovery champions gathered to advocate for legislative priorities, including expanding recovery housing and peer support services.
  • Girls Inc. Advocacy Day: More than 50 girls participated in discussions and meetings with legislators to learn about civic engagement and the government process.

Washington Recovery Alliance’s Recovery Advocacy Day

The Washington Recovery Alliance (WRA) convened over 300 recovery champions at the Washington State Capitol to advocate for critical legislative priorities. This annual event, which began in 2016, has grown significantly, reflecting the increasing importance of recovery advocacy in Washington state.

Key legislative priorities for 2025 include:

  • Quality Recovery Housing Expansion: Advocates are pushing for the creation of a capital budget fund to support recovery housing initiatives.
  • Access to Peer Support Services: Expanding access to peer support services is essential for individuals in recovery.
  • Funding for Behavioral Health Services: Generating targeted revenue to fund behavioral health services is a top priority.

Jason Bliss, Executive Director of the Washington Alliance for Quality Recovery Residences, emphasized the importance of recovery housing, stating, "Recovery housing is more than just a place to live; it’s a foundation where hope is rebuilt, support is unwavering, and individuals are empowered to reclaim their lives one step at a time."

Monika Whitfield, Executive Director of the WRA, highlighted the power of collective voices in driving systemic change: "Advocacy is at the heart of recovery. When people with lived experience come together to share their stories, they don’t just shape policy—they break down stigma, expand access to life-saving resources, and create a future where recovery is celebrated and supported at every level."

Girls Inc. Advocacy Day

In Indianapolis, Cummins Inc. hosted the fifth annual Girls Inc. Advocacy Day, welcoming over 50 girls from across Indiana. This event aimed to demystify the government process and inspire young girls to engage in civic activities.

Participants engaged in:

  • Panel Discussions: Girls had the opportunity to hear from Cummins leaders about the importance of advocacy and civic engagement.
  • Small Group Sessions: Interactive sessions allowed participants to ask questions and learn more about the legislative process.
  • Meetings with Legislators: The day culminated in visits to the Indiana Statehouse, where the girls met with lawmakers to discuss issues important to them.

This initiative not only empowers young girls but also fosters a sense of community and encourages future leaders to take an active role in shaping their world.

Conclusion

Both the Recovery Advocacy Day and Girls Inc. Advocacy Day exemplify the power of community engagement in driving change. By bringing together individuals with shared experiences and goals, these events create a platform for advocacy that can lead to meaningful legislative action and inspire the next generation of leaders. As communities continue to unite for health and recovery, the impact of these advocacy efforts will resonate far beyond the events themselves.
