Empowering Women: A Global Call for Gender Equality and Democracy

Dated: February 2, 2025

In a significant global movement, over 650 women leaders and activists from around 40 countries have united to demand democracy and gender equality in Syria. This call to action comes in the wake of the recent political changes in the region, emphasizing the need for women’s voices in shaping a democratic future.

Key Takeaways

  • Global Coalition: Over 650 women from various countries have signed an open letter advocating for women’s rights and democratic governance in Syria.
  • Recognition of AANES: The letter calls for international recognition of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) as a model for democratic governance.
  • Women’s Role in Reconstruction: The signatories stress that women must be at the forefront of Syria’s reconstruction and political processes.
  • Warning Against Violence: The letter warns against supporting jihadist groups and arms sales to Turkey, which are seen as threats to peace and stability.

The open letter, addressed to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and other global leaders, highlights the devastation caused by the Syrian civil war and the critical role women have played in defending their communities. The signatories assert that the reconstruction of Syria must prioritize women’s involvement in all aspects of governance and society.

Women’s Leadership in Syria

The letter emphasizes the importance of the AANES, established in 2012, which has become a beacon of women’s liberation and grassroots democracy. Women in this region have actively participated in the fight against ISIS and have been instrumental in fostering a multi-ethnic and multi-religious coexistence.

The Syrian Women’s Council has also outlined 13 goals to ensure women’s decisive participation in political processes, which the open letter supports. This coalition of women from diverse backgrounds is a testament to the global solidarity for gender equality and democratic governance.

Global Discussions on Gender Equality

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 in Davos, Egypt’s Minister of Planning, Rania Al-Mashat, addressed the importance of gender equality in achieving sustainable economic growth. She highlighted that closing the gender gap could potentially double global GDP growth rates over the next decade.

Al-Mashat participated in discussions with global leaders, emphasizing that achieving gender equality is essential for resilient economies and fair transitions. She pointed out that improving women’s productivity through education and skills development is crucial for economic stability and recovery from global shocks.

A Call to Action

The letter concludes with a strong call to action for the international community to recognize the AANES and support civil organizations in the region. It stresses that empowering women is key to creating a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future for Syria and beyond.

This global movement for gender equality and empowerment is not just a call for women’s rights in Syria but a broader demand for democratic values and inclusive governance worldwide. The unity among women leaders across the globe signifies a powerful push towards a future where women’s voices are heard and valued in all spheres of life.
