Local Nonprofit Spreads Holiday Cheer to Children Battling Cancer

Dated: December 5, 2024

A local nonprofit organization, Hydrants of Hope, is making a significant impact this holiday season by supporting children who are battling or have battled cancer. The organization hosted a festive Christmas party at the Stokely Event Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, bringing joy and community spirit to families facing the challenges of cancer.

Key Takeaways

  • Hydrants of Hope has been supporting children with cancer since 2012.
  • The annual Christmas party aims to spread holiday cheer to affected families.
  • The event fosters a sense of community among children and families dealing with similar struggles.

The Heart of Hydrants of Hope

Founded in 2012 by Tulsa firefighter Mark Meyer during his own battle with thyroid cancer, Hydrants of Hope has dedicated itself to uplifting children and families affected by cancer. The organization’s mission is to provide support and joy during difficult times, particularly during the holiday season when many families may feel the weight of their struggles more acutely.

Kinsey Blunt, the co-director of Hydrants of Hope, expressed the organization’s hope that one day, cancer will be a thing of the past. "Our hope is that one of these days cancer just becomes something in the history books and that there isn’t a need for us anymore because that would mean cancer didn’t exist," she said.

A Night of Joy and Connection

The Christmas party held on Wednesday night was a heartwarming event filled with laughter, joy, and connection. Children and their families gathered to celebrate, share stories, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Ten-year-old Addilan Stewart, who has been attending Hydrants of Hope events for five years, shared her thoughts on the importance of such gatherings. "To see people my age around these parts, especially with conditions like mine, is actually very cool," she remarked.

The event provided a much-needed respite for families who often find themselves in the midst of challenging circumstances. Blunt emphasized the importance of creating a space where families can come together, have fun, and connect with others who understand their struggles. "Christmas is one of those times of year where it can be tough for some people, and we just want to give them time to have fun and be around people that are going through a similar struggle as them," she explained.

Resilience and Hope

The resilience of the children involved is truly inspiring. Many of them, like Addilan, demonstrate incredible strength in the face of adversity. Addilan also had a message for other children facing similar challenges: "Never let bullies make you feel down by yourself."

Hydrants of Hope relies on local volunteers who come together to organize various events throughout the year, all aimed at making life a little easier for these brave children. Blunt noted, "I don’t feel like anyone should battle cancer; it’s just a horrible, horrible diagnosis. Kids are just so pure, and some of them don’t even act like they’re sick. They’re just resilient."

How to Get Involved

For those looking to support Hydrants of Hope, there are various ways to get involved. The organization welcomes volunteers and donations to help continue their mission of spreading joy and support to children battling cancer. By participating in events or contributing in other ways, community members can play a vital role in making a difference in the lives of these children and their families.

As the holiday season continues, the work of Hydrants of Hope serves as a reminder of the power of community, compassion, and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
