Nonprofit Organization Questions Funding Distribution After Lewiston Mass Shooting

Dated: October 15, 2024

In the wake of the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, a nonprofit organization is raising serious concerns regarding the distribution of funds intended to support the victims’ families. The Uvalde Foundation for Kids has initiated an independent investigation into how the Maine Community Foundation allocated the $6.6 million raised through the Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Fund.

Key Takeaways

  • The Uvalde Foundation for Kids is questioning the allocation of funds raised for victims of the Lewiston mass shooting.
  • Families of victims report inadequate support from nonprofit organizations that received funding.
  • The Maine Community Foundation raised $6.6 million, with a portion going directly to victims’ families and the rest to various nonprofits.

Background of the Lewiston Mass Shooting

The Lewiston mass shooting, which occurred last October, claimed the lives of 18 individuals and left many families devastated. In response, the Maine Community Foundation established the Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Fund to provide financial assistance to those affected.

Concerns Raised by the Uvalde Foundation

The Uvalde Foundation for Kids, which focuses on supporting families impacted by gun violence, has expressed concerns about the adequacy of the support provided to the victims’ families. Jennifer West, a board member of the foundation, stated that the organization aims to assess whether the funding received by families was sufficient to meet their immediate and long-term needs.

West emphasized that families affected by the tragedy require ongoing support, including:

  • Mental health care
  • Counseling services
  • Assistance with loss of income
  • Coverage for other recurring expenses

Reports of Denied Support Services

Families of victims have reported difficulties in accessing support services from nonprofit organizations that received funding from the Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Fund. This has raised questions about the effectiveness of the fund’s distribution and whether it truly meets the needs of those it was intended to help.

Calls for Transparency

Amanda Sussman, whose nephew was killed in the shooting, has voiced her concerns regarding the allocation of funds. She noted that while community building is important, the primary focus should be on supporting the families of the victims. Sussman stated, "I think the needs for his family are not met by what was done for the community frankly."

In light of these concerns, the Uvalde Foundation is requesting that the Maine Community Foundation release a formal report detailing which nonprofits received funds and the amounts allocated to each. They are also seeking oversight from the state’s attorney general’s office to ensure transparency in the distribution process.

Conclusion

As the investigation unfolds, the Uvalde Foundation for Kids aims to shed light on the distribution of funds raised for the victims of the Lewiston mass shooting. The organization is committed to ensuring that families receive the support they need during this difficult time, and it is calling for accountability from the Maine Community Foundation and the nonprofits involved in the funding distribution.
