Nonprofits Unite to Create Inclusive Recreation Center in Wilmington

Dated: December 8, 2024

Wilmington, N.C. is set to welcome a groundbreaking 135-acre Inclusive Recreation Center, spearheaded by the Wilmington Aquatic Center and Access of Wilmington. This facility aims to enhance the health, safety, and quality of life for residents by providing a range of sports and fitness programs, including a large 50-meter Olympic-sized pool designed to cater to individuals with mental and physical disabilities.

Key Takeaways

  • Facility Size: The center will span 135 acres, featuring an Olympic-sized pool.
  • Focus on Inclusivity: Programs will be tailored for individuals with disabilities, emphasizing water safety.
  • Community Impact: The center aims to improve overall health and inspire future Olympians.
  • Olympic Inspiration: The project is set to open in 2028, coinciding with the next Olympics in the U.S.

The Vision Behind the Center

The proposed Inclusive Recreation Center is not just a facility; it represents a vision for a healthier, more inclusive community. During an informational session, Kathleen Baker, a gold and silver Olympic medalist, shared her personal journey and the critical role access to swimming facilities played in her success. Baker emphasized the need for a larger aquatic center in a coastal town like Wilmington, where swimming is essential for safety and recreation.

Baker stated, "We need a bigger aquatic center that can house many people so we can have every kid in Wilmington learn how to swim." Her testimony highlights the importance of providing resources that can change lives and inspire future generations.

Features of the Recreation Center

The Inclusive Recreation Center will offer a variety of features aimed at promoting health and wellness:

  • 50-Meter Olympic-Sized Pool: Designed for competitive swimming and training.
  • Swimming Lessons: Programs specifically for individuals with disabilities to learn water safety.
  • Sports and Fitness Programs: A range of activities to engage the community and promote physical health.

Community Engagement and Development

The location of the center, on Olsen Farm adjacent to Murrayville Road and I-40, is strategically chosen to attract both locals and tourists. Paula Crozier, Executive Director of Access of Wilmington, expressed optimism about the center’s potential to become a popular destination, stating, "This particular Olsen Farm Recreation Village will be an amazing development structure that will bring in people from all over the country."

Looking Ahead

Set to open in 2028, the Inclusive Recreation Center is poised to become a beacon of hope and inspiration for the Wilmington community. With the next Olympics taking place in the U.S. around the same time, the center aims to spark a movement that encourages young swimmers to pursue their dreams and engage with their community through sports.

As the project progresses, the collaboration between nonprofits and community leaders will be crucial in ensuring that the center meets the needs of all residents, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and enjoy the benefits of recreational activities.
