Tragic Car Crash Claims Lives of Four Young Girls in Illinois Youth Program

Dated: April 30, 2025

A devastating car crash in Chatham, Illinois, on April 28, 2025, has left four young girls dead and several others injured. The incident occurred during an after-school program at the YNOT After School Camp, where children were participating in activities when a vehicle crashed into the building.

Key Takeaways

  • Four young victims, aged 7 to 18, were killed in the crash.
  • The driver, Marianne Akers, is under investigation but not in custody.
  • Six other children were injured, with one in critical condition.
  • The community is mourning the loss and coming together to support the victims’ families.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 3:20 PM, a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Marianne Akers veered off course, traveling through a field before crashing into the east side of the YNOT After School Camp. The impact was catastrophic, resulting in the deaths of four girls: Kathryn Corley (7), Alma Buhnerkempe (7), Ainsley Johnson (8), and Rylee Britton (18). All four were pronounced dead at the scene due to blunt force injuries.

The crash also injured six other children, who were quickly transported to local hospitals for treatment. As of the latest reports, one child remains in critical condition. The driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and toxicology reports are pending as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Community Response

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Chatham community, prompting an outpouring of grief and support. Local residents have gathered to honor the victims, laying flowers and stuffed animals outside the youth camp. Jennifer Walston, a mother of three daughters who attended the camp, expressed her heartbreak, stating, "It’s just not fair. It’s not fair this happened."

Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, with one witness recalling hearing loud bangs and seeing the aftermath of the crash. Taylor Godwin, who lives nearby, said, "You never imagine it can happen in your community. It’s a terrible situation to see anybody that’s been killed, especially a child."
