Environmental Award Program for Individuals, Businesses, and Non-Profits in California

Dated: March 6, 2023

The City of Encinitas Environmental Commission is proud to announce the Environmental Award Program seeks to recognize deserving individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations for their commitment to environmental stewardship and outstanding environmental achievements in the city.

Donor Name: City of Encinitas

State: California

City: Encinitas

Type of Grant: Award

Deadline: 03/31/2023

Details:

The purpose of this award program is to highlight, recognize, and congratulate Encinitas residents, organizations, and businesses that have achieved exceptional environmental goals. By their efforts, these parties promote proper stewardship of the precious environment with which they are blessed.

Nominations may be in one of four categories: a) Non-profit organization, b) A for-profit business c) Environmental Hero Youth (under 18), d) Environmental Hero Adult.

Each award is an environmentally-themed plaque presented by the Environmental Commission of the City of Encinitas. There will be one award winner in each of the four categories.  The award is chosen by an Environmental Commission subcommittee through a competitive selection process.

Nominators may submit multiple nominations, but each nomination must be on a separate form. Self-nominations are also welcome. Nominators do not need to be Encinitas residents, but the nominees must (for individuals) reside in or (for organizations) be based in Encinitas.

Award Criteria

Guidelines for projects worthy of an award include the following:

  • Protects or preserves the environment; examples include: conserves energy or water, reduces waste or toxins, reduces air or water pollution, enhances sustainable co-habitation with native plants and animals, or reduces Greenhouse Gases (GHGs).
  •  Impacts the community positively: inspires, enlightens, educates, or motivates the community to engage in environmental concerns.
  • Shows innovation and dedication: sustainability requires a determined change from established business-as-usual procedures, so creativity and inspiration are necessary. Patience and persistence are often necessary to see new ideas sprout.

Nominations are evaluated by a jury of five independent environmental leaders in San Diego County. They are not affiliated with the City of Encinitas either as elected officials, as members of any Commission, as staff, or as consultants. The relative weighting of the award criteria is ultimately up to the judges.
