Applications Open for Hurricane Ian Animal Disaster Funding

Dated: October 31, 2022

The Animal Disaster Funding Collaborative is currently accepting applications from animal welfare organizations that were directly impacted by Hurricane Ian, or that were asked by an Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in the affected areas to assist impacted organizations.

Donor Name:  Agency Having Jurisdiction

State: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina

County: All Counties

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 11/30/2022

Details:

Special grants are being made available to animal welfare organizations and agencies by a collaborative of animal welfare grantmakers in order to meet the needs of pets and pet owners arising from large-scale natural or man-made disasters.  Members of this collaborative include but are not limited to: A Kinder World Foundation, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Petco Love, Petfinder Foundation, and PetSmart Charities.

These grants are available to qualified animal welfare organizations and government agencies based in the U.S. whose communities are suffering the impact of Hurricane Ian and whose work benefits companion animals (e.g., dogs, cats, and equines). A limited amount of funding is also available to support wildlife and farm sanctuaries in these communities.

Grants will also be considered for organizations that have not been directly impacted by these disasters but are helping another organization in need — for example, assisting with the intake of animals from an impacted area. Applicants that are responding to disasters must have received a request from an Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to be eligible for support. An AHJ is an organization designated as a responder by the Office of Emergency Management at the city, county, state, or federal level.

Applications from organizations that self-deploy or are based outside the vicinity of the affected geographic areas will not be considered.

Funding may include the following purposes:

  • Resources, including pet supplies and food for pet owners
  • Rescue and shelter supplies and equipment
  • Sheltering or temporary boarding and fostering of rescued or at-risk animals
  • Transport/transfers/relocation of animals
  • Emergency and ongoing veterinary or medical care for animals
  • Physical and behavioral examination and rehabilitation
  • Overtime expenses for shelter staff
  • Travel and related incidental expenses for shelter staff or staff deployed to affected disaster areas to assist with disaster response for animals
  • Infrastructure repairs/rebuilding, including outside areas, kennels, outbuildings, vehicles, and equipment
  • Cleanup of debris in and around facilities
  • Long-term medical care/treatment for affected animals
  • External temporary boarding for animals from damaged facilities pending property restoration

In-kind donations, such as pet supplies and food, may also be available.

These grants are not provided for disaster preparedness.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization or government agency, such as municipal or county animal control, with an animal welfare mission or direct relationship with an animal welfare entity, and a federal tax ID (EIN/Employer Identification Number)
  • This may include, but is not limited to, shelters, rescues, sanctuaries/hospice, food banks/pantries, animal hospitals/medical clinics, and social service organizations that also assist pet owners and/or displaced or homeless companion animals
  • The applicant organization must have been directly affected by the disaster or be providing/participating in direct response to the disaster at the request of an Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). (For more information about specific AHJs in the affected areas, which vary by county, contact the county Offices of Emergency Management in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.)
  • The applicant organization must be located in or near the affected geographic areas within the U.S. only
  • The applicant must be in need of immediate assistance.
