The City of Gaithersburg will be offering 1-year Community Service Grant awards with the option to award for an additional year, as well as 1-year Youth Enrichment Grant awards. Continuation of funding will be based on pending documentation of contract compliance and subject to revisions within a given scope of work to address emerging community needs.
Community Services Grants
The City of Gaithersburg is accepting FY23 grant applications from qualified not-for-profit 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) organizations to collaboratively address community needs in the areas of Health and Mental Health, Food and Nutrition, Housing Stabilization Services, Vocational Counseling, Housing Preservation Services, Youth Mental Health, and Services for Seniors, Youth and/or Adults with disabilities.
Funding recommendations are provided to the Mayor and City Council by the appointed members of the City’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The Mission of the CAC is to explore gaps in social services for City of Gaithersburg residents; develop annual statements of need in priority areas for the issuance of grants/contracts to nonprofit agencies/organizations; review and evaluate nonprofit agency/organization grant/contract proposal submissions and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council for providing funding for them; and perform annual site visits to nonprofit agencies/organizations that have active grants/contracts with the City.
Eligibility Criteria
- All FY23 grant applications must include a specific outreach plan to focus on multilingual outreach and service within priority need neighborhoods, particularly in the 20877 zip code.
- All FY23 grant contracts will include a level of citywide coordination with any service consolidation programs created or expanded, such as the Gaithersburg Financial Empowerment Center and the Gaithersburg CARES Hub.
City of Gaithersburg School-Based Nonprofit Grants
The City of Gaithersburg is seeking not for profit, 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) agencies to partner with specific schools in the Gaithersburg area to apply for FY23 School-Based Nonprofit Grants. This grant program is designed to support qualifying agencies that provide school-based programming to City youth in partnership with an eligible Elementary (starting with Pre-K), Middle or High School.
Focus Areas
Below are the City’s Youth Enrichment Grant program application focus areas. These program examples have been determined by ongoing needs assessments, input from City youth, schools, Educational Enrichment Committee members, and area service providers. A focus on educational support and enrichment needs has been deemed a vital service as unfinished learning becomes more apparent within our student population as a direct result of the COVID-19 crisis. Examples of programming that may qualify include but is not limited to:
- Youth Mental Health Support to include after school programs. Examples include sports, dance and recreation, including field trips.
- Training, Career & Employment. Examples include resume writing, interview coaching, workforce development and internships.
- Parental Engagement & Support
- Addiction Prevention. Examples include social and emotional learning, recreation, gang prevention, parent engagement, and wrap around services.
- Digital Access & Inclusion. Examples include student access to needed equipment and digital literacy courses and trainings.
- Early Childhood Development. Examples include parent classes, infant/child supplies, child care for expecting and/or parenting students.
- Mentoring & Education Support Programming. Examples include after school tutoring programs, peer-to-peer support, and academic support to at-risk students.
- Academic Support & Unfinished Learning. The pandemic has disrupted learning and has magnified historical academic inequalities. Programs focusing on equity gaps and the need for digital learning opportunities for low income students will be considered.
- Literacy & Language Initiatives from Cradle to Career
- Grief Education and Counseling. Examples include guided conversations surrounding death and loss, expressive arts programs, and experiential activities.
Funding recommendations for School-Based Nonprofit Grants are provided to the Mayor and City Council by the appointed members of the Educational Enrichment Committee (EEC). The mission of the EEC is to collaborate with families, educators, nonprofits, businesses and other stakeholders to encourage the support of creative, impactful, inclusive and rewarding programs that enrich educational opportunities within our community.
Priority funding will be awarded to programs that:
- Have clear and committed collaboration partnerships or collaboration plans with City of Gaithersburg departments, including both the Community Services and Youth and Sports Divisions and the Gaithersburg Youth Opportunities Coalition (GYOC).
- Focus on extra-curricular and after school activities.
- Engage in equitable and creative outreach and student engagement within all cultural communities and various populations.
Eligibility Criteria
- All programs must be conducted with host school approval and in collaboration with the host school.
- Eligible host schools must have a student enrollment population of 10% or more or at least 150 City of Gaithersburg resident students. The FY23 list of eligible schools is available in the Documents box.
- Participation in quarterly meetings of the City of Gaithersburg Youth Opportunities Coalition, the annual Youth Voice Workshop, as well as various youth events, is required.
- Collaboration with City departments that offer youth program opportunities. Examples include the Community Services and Youth and Sports Divisions.
- A separate application must be submitted for each program.
- One application can be submitted for multiple schools.
- The Preparer, Principal and the Nonprofit Executive Director must sign the Application and complete and submit an MOU.
- The program budget(s) information must be complete, including calculation of per unit service costs.
