Over 200,000 residents of Northern Virginia are current or former military, including 24,000 on active duty, 18,000 in training for reserves or national guard, and 168,000 veterans. The needs of this population are diverse, as described in our 2014 report on veterans in Northern Virginia.
The Military Personnel & Their Families Fund is a component fund of The Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia, an unrestricted endowment at the Community Foundation that makes grants to help build a community that works for everyone.
In 2023, applications will be accepted in the following categories:
- Workforce Development/Job Training Skills for Military personnel, veterans and/or their families
- Emergency Assistance for Military personnel, veterans and/or their families
Eligibility Criteria
For 2023, the Community Foundation will consider grant applications that meet the following criteria, although the exact grant amount is to be determined.
- Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations providing charitable or educational services. Local, state and federal government entities are not eligible to apply.
- This year, grant requests will only be considered for general organizational support. Applications for capital improvements, endowments, or scholarship awards will not be considered.
- Grants will be made to organizations providing services in Northern Virginia (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, plus the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church and Manassas/Manassas Park).
- The Community Foundation intends to make two grants of an amount to be determined.
- Applications that are late or incomplete will not be considered.
- Only one application per organization will be considered.
