Strategic Priorities
The Polk Foundation prioritizes investments that promote the economic, social, and emotional welfare of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and increase the opportunities available to them. In particular, the Foundation focuses on:
- Programs designed in partnership with people with disabilities and their families
- Technology initiatives that enable maximum independence
- Relevant research with high potential for quick translation to clinical care and quality of life improvements
- Community initiatives that aim to make neighborhoods more welcoming and inclusive of those with developmental and intellectual disabilities
- Capital improvements (on a limited basis)
Geographic Focus
The Foundation’s geographic focus is the ten counties in southwestern Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant organizations must be classified as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and as public charities under Section 509(a) of that code. Organizations and government entities that are federally tax-exempt for other reasons can also apply for funding.
- The geographic focus of the Foundation’s grantmaking program is Pittsburgh and the surrounding 10-county southwestern Pennsylvania region.
