Performing Arts Disovery (PAD): An International Showcase Opportunity

Dated: December 27, 2021

Performing Arts Disovery (PAD) is an international showcase opportunity for U.S.-based performing artists who are ready to tour internationally.

Donor Name: National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

Country: U.S.

State: All States

Type of Grant: Showcase

Type of Entity: Artists

Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 01/07/2022

Details:

Performing Arts Discovery (PAD) is a program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). PAD is managed by WAA on behalf of the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations (RAOs). The NEA launched PAD in 2015 to promote U.S. artists to international programmers, festival directors, and venue managers.

PAD provides virtual international showcase opportunities for U.S.-based performing artists who are ready to tour internationally.

The purpose of the PAD program is to introduce international presenters to U.S. performing artists and companies, thereby reducing barriers for American artists overseas. The primary objective for 2021 is the creation of 30 professionally-produced live performance videos for international markets.

Applications are open to music, dance, and theatre artists/ensembles with a demonstrated capacity to tour internationally.

For 2021, given the COVID-19 pandemic and limits on international travel, the structure of the program shifted, inviting artists/ensembles to apply to PAD and providing those selected with an international virtual showcase opportunity.

Program Benefits

  • The purpose of the PAD program is to introduce international presenters to U.S. performing artists and companies, thereby reducing barriers for American artists overseas.
  • Artists/ensembles accepted into the PAD program — PAD Delegates — receive support from our expert video production team to create a professionally-produced live performance video which will be promoted and showcased on a virtual cloud-based platform for international markets.
  • There is no application fee for PAD.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Performing artists from all traditional, classical, contemporary, and culturally specific art forms are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must:
    • Be US-based professional performing artists;
    • Be US citizens or have permanent resident status;
    • Be planning to tour work within the coming three years; and
    • Submit a complete online form by the posted deadline.
    • BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ artists are encouraged to apply.

Limitations

  • Artists who showcased in the 2020 Arts Midwest + WAA Official Showcase are not eligible to apply, including those selected for the 2020 Black Voices @ WAA, and those selected in 2020 who deferred performance to the 2021 Arts Midwest Conference.
  • There is a limit of one application per artist/ensemble.
  • No more than two artists/ensembles represented by the same artist manager/agency will be recommended.

BIPOC/LGBTQ+ Artists are encouraged to Apply

  • PAD encourages those who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and/or LGBTQ+ to apply.
  • The PAD program is open to all U.S.-based performing artists with readiness to tour internationally.

Program Requirements

Those selected to showcase must:

  • Be available to record and work with the showcase production team March 15, 2022 – April 15, 2022.
  • Coordinate with the production team to receive and return rented recording equipment.
  • Agree to provide additional recording equipment and instruments at own expense.
  • Be responsible for all necessary licenses and permissions to perform, promote, broadcast, transmit, and/or display all elements of their performance, including without limitation elements protected by copyright, trademark, patent, rights of privacy, rights of publicity, trade secret, and contract.
  • Be responsible for any costs and arrangements related to the rental of recording space, travel, and lodging for the recording session.
