NewLit has awarded thirty-eight Jack Hazard Fellowships to writers who teach high school from fifteen different states across the nation. For Summer 2025, five fellowships of $5,000 were awarded to creative writers who are full-time educators teaching in accredited high schools in the United States.
Jack Hazard Fellows are fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and memoir writers who teach full time in an accredited high school in the United States. They provide award that enables these creative writers who teach to focus on their writing for a summer.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be writers of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or memoir.
- Applicants commit to concentrating upon their creative writing during Summer 2026.
- Applicants have taught full-time (grades 9-12) for at least three years at an accredited high school.
- Applicants are full-time, current instructors (in any department or division, not just English) in an accredited high school (grades 9–12, teaching in the 2025–26 academic year).
- Applicants will expect to be contracted to return to full-time teaching in Fall 2026.
- Applicants submit a writing sample along with other related support material requested.
