As a result of several opportunities and issues facing the residents of Lexington over the past several years, there has been an unprecedented level of concern for the city’s tree canopy. Upon hearing these concerns and during discussions on how the City would allocate its share of COVID relief funds, the Urban County Council and the administration chose to allocate funds to growing Lexington’s tree canopy.
Objectives
- Increase the scale and health of the tree canopy.
- Increase community buy-in and resident engagement in assuring the creation and maintenance of the tree canopy.
- Guide a cultural shift in the understanding of the benefits of trees for individuals, the economy, the community’s social structure, and the collective community’s health.
- Address the equity challenges of access to the benefits of a healthy tree canopy.
Focus Areas
Four areas of focus that Lex Grow Trees determined are:
- Mobilization of community and neighborhood tree advocates and stewards
- Tree planting
- Tree maintenance
- Tree education
Funding Information
The maximum grant amount to be awarded per application is $100,000.

- Incorporated, active neighborhood or homeowners associations
