Funding Information

  • Grant funding is provided on a reimbursement basis only.
  • Applicants may submit applications for project amounts between $1,000 to $25,000 for the Community Parks and Trails Grant.

Eligible Expenses

  • Costs associated with the improvement of existing park or trail facilities, or the purchase or development of new park or trail facilities in Portage County. The park or trail facility must be owned or leased (minimum 25-year lease) by the applicant and must be open to the general public for use.
  • Potential projects include both land acquisition and site development projects. Please find below a list of eligible and ineligible examples for each project type. Note that these lists are provided as examples and do not represent complete lists.

Eligible Projects

Property Acquisition Projects: Acquisition of title to property, or long-term easement or lease, to be used for park or conservation purposes or for facilities to support such purposes. Appraisals, surveys, and environmental site assessments are eligible costs, legal fees and most closing costs are ineligible. Eminent domain acquisitions of any kind are not eligible.

  • Projects to improve public access and enjoyment of parks, while conserving natural resources.
  • Examples of eligible development projects include:
    • Trails and support facilities, including trailheads and restrooms.
    • Picnic and support facilities, including shelters, access parking and restrooms.
    • Nature play areas; Storybook Trails
    • Park amenities such as: benches, tables, waste receptacles, water fountains, bike racks
    • Native plant landscaping, rain gardens, reforestation
    • Entrance and educational signage for a park or trail
    • Recreational facilities such as sledding areas, bike parks, campsites, archery ranges, dog parks, kayaking, nature play
    • Reconstruction or rehabilitation of outdoor recreation facilities
    • Planning/designing/engineering of projects mentioned above.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Villages and townships within Portage County are eligible project sponsors.
  • Cities, schools and nonprofits are currently not eligible applicants. Nonprofits may request funds through partnering with a township or village if applicable.
