The purpose of these funds is to support capital projects, marketing initiatives, and events that promote tourism, increase overnight stays, and generate economic impact for local accommodations and restaurants.
Priorities
- Attract visitors to the City of Greenville.
- Generate additional tourism-related tax dollars.
- Promote dining and overnight stays.
- Enhance recreation facilities, amenities, and trails.
- Highlight historic, cultural, and recreational venues.
- Advertise and promote tourism to increase attendance.
- Promote arts and cultural events.
- Demonstrate additional government or private sector support (2:1 match required for established entities and 1:1 for start-ups).
- Infrastructure, including civic, cultural, or public facilities that serve tourists.
Funds may not be used for
- Promotion or marketing expenses for capital or fundraising campaigns.
- Regular operating activities, except activities identified in SC Code Section 6-4-10.
- Re-granting to other organizations (all funds must be spent on the project or event specified in the ATAX grant application by the organization that is awarded the funds).
- Promotional expenses that include souvenirs, prizes, give-a-ways, awards, trophies, or any other type of operational expense.
- Clothing costs (event T-shirts, uniforms, etc.)
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a government or registered non-profit entity.
- Provide an IRS tax-exempt determination letter or Charitable Registration with the South Carolina Secretary of State’s Office.
- Be in existence for at least one year.
- Be in good standing with the City and without outstanding debt.
- Ensure all projects or events have a direct tourism impact to the City of Greenville and are open to the public.
- Demonstrate significant economic and/or cultural impact (e.g., hotel room nights, tourist attendance.
