The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant aims to boost local economies and outdoor industries while improving community well-being. This grant supports planning, development, and improvement of trails and related infrastructure that connect people with nature. It promotes equitable access and encourages long-term stewardship of New Mexico’s landscapes.
The program plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy forests, rivers, and watersheds. It helps fuel economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
For 2026, $7.2 million is available for the Trails+ Grant. Grants are offered in three tiers: Tier 1 Local Projects range from $25,000 to $99,999; Tier 2 Regional Projects range from $100,000 to $499,999; and Tier 3 Regional Projects can receive between $500,000 and $1,000,000.
Projects must be completed within 24 months from the contract signing date. Eligible expenses include structures and infrastructure that improve public nature-based outdoor recreation, design and engineering plans, and equipment related to project construction and maintenance (up to 30% of the grant). Trail signage, maintenance, and improvements to existing outdoor infrastructure are also covered. Administrative costs can be up to 10%, and billed labor is eligible.
Eligibility varies by tier. Tier 1 Local Projects accept applications from Tribes, Pueblos, Nations, municipalities, counties, nonprofits (with capacity for Tier 2), public schools, colleges, soil and water conservation districts, and acequia and land grant associations. Tier 2 Regional Projects have a similar list but also allow nonprofits with capacity. Tier 3 Regional Projects are open to the same entities as Tier 2 except nonprofits are not eligible.
