Organizing Grants from the AJ Muste Foundation are available only to organizations and projects based in the United States. The grant size ranges from $1,000 to $10,000, with most awards around $5,000.
The foundation supports both newly-founded and existing groups engaged in activist organizing. They prefer organizations with limited foundation funding or traditional income streams. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations, groups with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, and those with a bank account in their name.
Funding can be used for projects or general operating costs, focusing on creative and bold ideas with specific goals. The foundation prioritizes efforts aimed at systemic change rather than personal or individual support.
Individuals or their projects are not eligible for funding, as the foundation supports group efforts only. They do not fund direct services, healing or therapy work, or mutual aid unless it is a small part of larger organizing efforts.
Projects or organizations with operating budgets over $250,000 are ineligible, as are lobbying or political campaigns. Funding is not available for art, film, or dance projects unless these are a minor part of organizing work. Tuition, scholarships, and university-supported projects are also excluded from funding.
