The Basic Center Program provides temporary emergency shelter and counseling services for youth under 18 years old. It supports community-based organizations in operating short-term shelters, including group homes and host family homes, for young people who have run away or face homelessness or housing instability. These services are targeted at youth not currently involved with the child welfare or juvenile justice systems.
This program offers grants ranging from $100,000 to $500,000, with an estimated total funding pool of over $23 million. Award amounts typically range between $199,999 and $350,000. The grant period lasts for three years.
Eligible applicants include a wide variety of organizations and government entities. These include public and state-controlled institutions of higher education, special district governments, county governments, Native American tribal governments and organizations (both federally recognized and others), independent school districts, private institutions of higher education, nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status (excluding institutions of higher education), public housing authorities, city or township governments, and state governments.
